It’s as if I have been in an accident and have to relearn to use a lim again. The connection between my brain and grit or sticktoitiveness is severed but some how slowly and ever so painstakingly, healing is occurring so there is hope. sticktoitiveness my word for 2014.

But the test misses scoring those dry times where I have to divert my energy to a passive task and let go of the block. I admit, I have a dozen ideas sketched out on paper, created after I broke away from my headline project. After a week or so, my brain has fermented a bit, and I’m back on track and I’ve solved a plot line, (or some other kind of mental obstacle). Heather posted a historical note about her grandmother and farming. My family, all eighteen or more sides, grew up on a farm. I’ve worked very long days on a farm, especially during harvest. I didn’t know so many products could be canned or preserved. If you really want to know what grit is, make sauerkraut or fresh horseradish from scratch. That will test your grit for sure. If you survive making those two concoctions with olfactory glands still functioning, writing is like eating chocolate cake. Been there, done that, and I buy it off the shelf. Whew! Grit is getting the job done regardless of it’s unpleasant nature; if it has to be done, grit (tenacity and commitment) is what drives us onward. Read Roughing It, by Mark Twain; Grit the main theme.

Don’t think of 3.88 as low! It’s a scale of 5 so that’s like 77%. Definitely a B. Room for improvement but not bad at all.

Thank you for pulling together these ideas in this cogent way – and letting me take a quiz to anchor myself on this concept of grit. I scored fairly low (3.88); and yet I consider myself to have grit. I enjoy your column, and I will read your book again, and perhaps Dwecks, and see if the DP prof has any data to report yet. You never cease to inspire, Carol. Best.

I’m a movie buff, so there’s little I see that I don’t like. The 1969 version earned John Wayne an Oscar (but that was probably a make-good for “Green Berets”) and it was his last film, I believe. The more recent version is pretty darn good too. In both cases, the “star” is the young girl. Maybe the title is about the true grit of the old cowboy as compared to the young female. See what you think.

You raise a really interesting question, Carol: How does one increase grit? I think the issue of deliberate practice might cover it. Check out my blog posts on that topic! (There are three of them.)

Cathy, given all the challenges you’ve faced in the past year, I’m not surprised your feeling tired and overwhelmed. (Also note, you’re SICK right now!) Take comfort in your grit score, however. It shows you have the right attitude!
