In reply to Judy Minkove. Honestly, the worst aspect of it was not the gov't shutdown (annoying) or the horrible suite (equally annoying), it was the RAIN. It just didn't stop! And I'm from Vancouver. Yes, I am very happy to be home, where, strangely enough, it's SUNNY. Yahoo!

What a shame, Daphne! I can attest to the dreadful weather that weekend–we live about an hour away in Baltimore. I deeply regret not having given you my phone number! You could have stayed with us or with relatives closer to D.C. Regardless, I love the way you entertained readers with each consecutive tale of woe. Leave it to you to turn your misfortunes into a riveting piece and end on a high note! Bet you were never so happy to return home.

In reply to Mellissa. That was probably the hardest part of it -- knowing that it was sunny in Vancouver (we talked with our kids nightly) and yet pouring with rain in DC!

We were on vacation over the government shut down too. We flew into Boise from Juneau and rented a car to travel across the country to Ohio to visit my aging mother. We had planned on going to Mt Rushmore, but no such luck. We did see the Crazy Horse Monument and museum so that was pretty neat. Got chased out of Custer S D by snow and ran right into tornadoes in Iowa- what fun! We sure don’t have those in Alaska. The worst part of the whole trip was the last night in Ohio. We stayed in a hotel that we had to pay a cabby a ridiculous some to take us to, then spent the whole night listening to the folks overhead running back and forth and jumping. Perhaps there was a soccer game going on, I don’t know. It’s why I seldom go on vacations, I’d much rather stay home and look at the scenery in front of me.
